Bognor Regis

Project type: Bungalow remodelling
Materials: Mixed wood staircase with oak treads, handrail and newel caps with beaded glass

The challenge

When Danny Mac and Carley Stenson returned to the bungalow where Danny was raised to create their dream home, they faced a significant challenge: how to transform a compact space without the option to extend. They wanted to maximise light and space whilst creating a consistent free-flowing layout.

The hallway was the key. They needed to open up the space as much as possible, but they were uncertain how to achieve this. As Carley explains:
“We’ve had tons of options and those are back and forth trying to get it right. I didn’t realise there were so many options.”

The challenge wasn’t just selecting a staircase – it was navigating the complexity of bespoke design choices and translating their vision into a finished product that would actually work in their space.

Our solution

Enter Rupert Cowley at Multi-Turn. What set this partnership apart was the collaborative approach to custom staircase design. Rather than presenting a fixed catalogue, Rupert worked closely with Danny and Carley – alongside their award-winning interior designer, Gina Everett from Create Perfect– to explore their ideas and make them work.

The turning point came when Rupert didn’t just listen; he developed their concepts.
“Our crazy ideas and he’s made them work,” Danny reflects. “We’ve thrown stuff at him and he’s created a perfect design for our hopefully perfect house.”

To bring the vision to life, Multi-Turn visited the home to gather precise measurements, ensuring the staircase would Fit First Time. With those measurements secured, the team conceptualised a design that would meet their requirements for light, space, and visual impact.

The solution combined bespoke timber construction with toughened glass balustrade, creating a stepped cut string effect that accentuates the treads whilst allowing light to flow through the hallway. Large curtail and bullnose feature steps were added at the base to provide width and visual presence, guiding movement through the space.

Light oak treads and handrails complement the interior style, whilst a large landing balcony – fitted with toughened glass balustrade – became a standout feature. This design floods both the landing and stairs with light whilst overlooking the open-plan living space below.

The result

What began as uncertainty about design options evolved into genuine excitement. Danny adds, “I never knew I could get so excited about stairs.”  whilst Carley is candid about the transformation: “I feel like we’ve come up with a really good bespoke option that Rupert’s helped us design.”

This is what collaborative bespoke timber staircase design delivers when approached as a true partnership: not a compromised solution, but a precision-built staircase that reflects the homeowner’s vision and becomes a defining feature of the home.

Multi-Turn didn’t just supply a product; they partnered to create something personal and perfectly suited to Danny and Carley’s space – turning their “crazy ideas” into an architectural statement that sets the tone for their entire home.
