PROJECT TYPE: Staircase & Components
MATERIALS: Oak, Glass
CLIENT: Having commenced preparations for the refurbishment of his own home, one of Southampton's most well-respected builders approached Multi-Turn with three inspiring photos in hand to help create his dream staircase.
The client wanted to replace his existing dated stairs with a modern and contemporary structure that would open up the hallway and dining room areas and create a statement feature in the centre of the house, without being too overpowering.
Through his own expertise and research, the client had already selected three of his favourite designs and the elements of which he wanted incorporated into his own staircase.
There were no architectural plans, so we began by producing various proposals at the quote stage to determine what the client liked before proceeding.
After carrying out a site survey and discussing and altering design options until the final stage, it was decided that we would rotate the direction of the stairs to improve access from the living areas and add more space near the front door. It was also decided that we would incorporate structural glass balustrades to brighten and open up the entire ground floor.
Once a final visual was agreed, the team in our workshop produced the stunning, completely bespoke oak staircase. We were tasked with the challenge of adding some unusual features, including a combination of cut strings and open risers, as well as treads which overhung the strings. Because of the style of the treads, the structural glass balustrade needed to be packed off the string and secured with chrome fixings.
The stairs were finished by a professional French polisher – as recommended by Multi-Turn – to produce a truly breath-taking product that the client was delighted with. The project cemented our partnership and we have gone on to work together on many other homes in and around Hampshire since then.
I'm very pleased with the staircase. Thanks for your help with the design.
